The Economic Side of the Seal River Watershed

The Seal River Watershed Proposal started with discussions around protecting caribou populations. But now, the proposal has expanded into a nearly 50,000 km2 IPCA that could significantly impact existing lodges, outfitters, resident hunters, tourism operators, and northern jobs across Manitoba.
Lodges and outfitters are not temporary users of the landscape, many are multi-generational businesses that support local employment, airline services, fuel suppliers, retailers, and conservation funding across the province.
While the proposal references ecological value, it also vaguely states that economic contributions from lodges, outfitters, licensed harvest, and tourism would increase the overall value of the region, yet no comprehensive economic impact assessment on the potential negative impacts to existing businesses and industries has been released. If these activities are restricted or removed, the economic loss to northern Manitoba could be tremendous.
At the same time, major questions remain unanswered:
- Why are established Manitoba operators being affected while commercial caribou harvesting outside of Manitoba continues?
- What protections exist for existing businesses and future generations?
- What will the long-term impact be on northern communities and jobs?
Conservation and economic sustainability should work together, not against each other.
