The Proposed New Provincial Park Designation (Seal River Watershed Proposal)

Another big concern surrounding the Seal River Watershed proposal is the creation of a new “Indigenous Traditional Use Park” designation which includes four sub-designations. Classifications that remain vague and lack clear long-term details around future access, land-use, and decision making.

While the current proposal states that activities such as hunting, fishing, outfitting, ecotourism, existing lodges, and the full range of outdoor recreation typically permitted in Manitoba provincial parks would continue to be allowed, many in the outdoor tourism industry remain concerned about what this designation could eventually become without clear guarantees, transparent policy, and ongoing industry involvement in future discussions.

This is not about opposing conservation. It is about ensuring there is transparency, certainty, and fair access before creating a new park model that could shape the future of land access across Manitoba for generations to come.

The Alliance, provincial, and federal governments have been working on this proposal since 2021, but we get 45 days to try alerting and educating our industry and the public about a proposal that has the capacity to change the future of land access, outdoor activities and Manitoba tourism for generations to come.

How is that reasonable?
